Apple Music now has more paid subscribers than Spotify

The battle for music streaming supremacy continues.

Apple Music has 28 million paid subscribers in the U.S. versus Spotify’s 26 million.

Apple Music now has more subscribers than Spotify in terms of paid subscribers in the United States.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a report published in February revealed that in the US Apple Music had 28 million paid subscribers in comparison to Spotify’s 26 million. However, Spotify still has more worldwide subscribers than Apple, this includes US users and free tier customers.

As far as growth rates go, Apple Music’s is higher both globally and in the US. The report states that the company’s growth rate sits at about 2.6% to 3%, compared to Spotify’s 1.5% to 2%.

Apple Music director Jimmy Iovine thinks something needs to change in the world of music streaming.

The battle for music streaming supremacy gets more interesting with these figures. Painting a clearer picture of Apple’s drive to dominate the streaming platform industry, the company has been adamant about pushing new “services” that cater to current iPhone users. And that’s one of the advantages that Apple has over Spotify.

With 900 million iPhone owners around the world currently, the fact that Apple Music comes already pre-installed on the device is huge for the tech giant. Additionally, phone plan carriers do bundle Apple Music into their deals as well, while on the other side, Spotify’s Spring and Samsung partnerships help with the Swedish company’s rate of growth.

Last year, Apple Music director Jimmy Iovine shared his thoughts on how he thinks music streaming services are too similar, and that something has to change.

“The streaming services are all charging $9.99 and everyone has the same music,” he said. “And it’s really nice. You get whatever song you want, you get your playlists – but there’s got to be more interaction between the artist and the audience.

The record producer and Beats co-founder seemed to hint that exclusives may be the way forward, despite record labels wanting you “to have the same music” on streaming sites.
